Congratulations Graduates!

This Friday, December 17th 2010, Broward College students walked across the stage at the Broward County Convention Center in celebration of their academic accomplishments. Among the many, stood two graduates that have, and will remain an eminent part of Alpha Delta Rho at South Campus; Bao Tran and Bazile Francois.

Graduating with Honors from the Honors Institute at Broward College, both Bao and Bazile have committed an outstanding amount of time and effort to scholarship and service to both the community and campus. Both Bao and Bazile will undoubtedly continue in their pursuit of excellence at their University of transfer, and succeed in every endeavor sought out.

Congratulations to the both of you, and you will be missed!

Need Community Service Hours?

Feed the Homeless

This Saturday, November 23rd at 11:00 a.m. Alpha Delta Rho will be feeding Women and Men in need at the Broward Outreach Center. This is not only a very fulfilling experience, but a great way to earn community service hours to be put on your transcript. If transportation to the Broward Outreach Center is an issue, members will be meeting at Broward College South Campus in the Breeze-way near the cafeteria at 10:00 a.m.to carpool.

 To benefit the Michelle A. Lawless Scholarship Fund, Broward College South Campus is collecting various items that would normally end up in a landfill in exchange for service hours. Below is the Link of the accepted items. Bag them in grocery bags categorized by type (i.e. chip bags, yogurt containers, etc.) These items are collected by Jarrod Hersh in the Financial Aid Office.

Better World Books

As an ongoing initiative, Alpha Delta Rho is collecting books for less fortunate students in impoverished countries. Any book/textbook in good condition, of any genre or for any age is acceptable. To donate bring your used books to the PTK office in Bldg. 68/ Rm. 253 above the Cafeteria.


Clothes Donation

As another ongoing initiative, Alpha Delta Rho is collecting clothes (preferably business attire) , shoes, bags, and belts in good condition, to donate to those in need at the Broward Outreach Center.To donate bring your used items to the PTK office in Bldg. 68/ Rm. 253 above the Cafeteria.

NOTE: For Clothes Donation, Better World Books, and Terracycle, your hours will be administered to you immediately. It is then your responsibility to turn sheets in to have these hours put onto your official transcript.  

Honors Project - Around the World in 80 Clicks

AROUND THE WORLD 

IN 80 CLICKS

Beginning November 3rd and continuing November 10th, Alpha Delta Rho held "Around the World in 80 Clicks" on South Campus. As our chapter's Honors Project, "80 Clicks" was an informative event investigating the Honors Study Topic of "The Democratization of Information: Power, Promise, and Peril." As a chapter we researched the means by which many countries such as those of Europe, Africa, and Asia communicate. This factual information was then compared to the United States, and what those of the United States know of these other countries. Food and Music of various countries and an exhibit of poster-boards displaying the research found filled the Breeze-Way on Campus.

For two months, Alpha Delta Rho chapter members conducted research by administering surveys in various classrooms around campus. On these surveys Students were asked questions about any given country, including its population, form of government, and the most recent news story about the country. Then, they were asked to answer the same questions regarding the country from which they originate. With many countries represented across campus, Student's surveys showed its diversity. After this research process and analysis, different clubs around campus were assigned a continent or region. It was the club's responsibility to construct a board answering the questions that were asked on the survey about the continent or region they were assigned. The Student Government Association (SGA) was assigned the continent of Europe. The Asian Club (AZN) was assigned the continent of Asia. Broward College Student Ambassadors were assigned North America. The American West Indies Club was assigned the Caribbean, and Phi Theta Kappa (Alpha Delta Rho) was assigned the continent of Africa. Members were encouraged to bring in food that represented their culture. Members brought in Colombian Empanadas, Chinese Fried Rice, Indo-Trinidadian Pholourie, and Peruvian Papa a la Huancaina. Students, Professors, and Deans lined up for plates of these delicacies. Sang Tran and Christopher Mondesir (Pictured Below) helped serve them. Soon after our Chapter's President, Onaje Lamont, and V.P. of Communications, Bazile Francios began playing music from around the world. Reggae from Jamaica, Kompa from Haiti, and Flamenco from Spain all enticed participants to learn a few new dance steps after eating. Attracting a great number of Students, Professors, and Deans, "Around the World in 80 Clicks" was a great success. 

General Meeting

Hello fellow Phi Theta Kappans! I hope you are all fairing well as the semester is winding down and are prepared for the winter term.

The next PTK-Alpha Delta Rho general meeting will be held this Friday, Nov. 19, at 12:00 p.m. in  bldg 69/room 133.
 
Plans for the winter term, upcoming conventions, and events will be discussed. Please attend in order to stay up to date on your chapter. Don't miss the many opportunities to get involved and earn service hours before graduation.

Community Service Opportunity: Adopt-A-Street

Continuing our commitment to service, Alpha Delta Rho is cleaning up 72nd Avenue between Pines Blvd and Pembroke Rd. this Friday at 4:30 p.m. This is a great way to get involved, meet your fellow Phi Theta Kappans, and earn community service hours. Come prepared in comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes, all cleaning materials needed will be provided. We will be meeting in the Phi Theta Kappa room above the cafeteria in Bldg 68 Room 253.

Leadership Conference at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida

This past weekend Alpha Delta Rho attended the Phi Theta Kappa Leadership Conference at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. Our chapter attended workshops on various topics of leadership such as; goal setting, decision making, team building and ethics. Being  the 2010-2011 Leadership Chapter of the Florida Region, we were in charge of one of the student workshops. Our workshop was on how to "Transform Yourself into a Leader." The conference was a great opportunity to make new connections and friendships with fellow Phi Theta Kappans from across the state.

Change In Schedule: General Meeting Canceled

General Meeting Update
As previously posted, Alpha Delta Rho was scheduled to have a General Meeting this Friday, September 17th 2010. This meeting has been canceled to observe Yom Kippur, as Broward College will be closed in respect of the holiday . Information regarding the next general meeting will be posted shortly.

Community Service Opportunity 
Alpha Delta Rho continues to show its dedication to community service by participating in 'Feed the Homeless' at the Broward Outreach Center every other Saturday. The Broward Outreach Center serves homeless men ,women, and children of South Broward County hot meals with our chapters help.
 
This is a great way to give back to the community and obtain Community Service Hours at the same time.

As a student at Broward College, the possibilities and opportunities available to you are numerous but are often over looked. One of which being Phi Theta Kappa. Phi Theta Kappa is an internationally recognized honor society for two-year colleges. With a minimum GPA requirement and one time membership fee, being a member of Phi Theta Kappa can open you up to many scholarship and leadership opportunities that will ultimately help in your advance to four-year institutions.
